MY RECENT DIAGNOSIS WITH MS

October 22nd, 2019

“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

To friends, clients, and anyone else reading this,

I have written and rewritten this post more times than I can count and debated not posting anything at all. However, I have always been an open person and find comfort in writing. I also believe we can find strength and support in sharing.

While our family are no strangers to hurdles, we seemed to have peace in a few years of “quiet” (not that our family is quiet, I mean you’ve met Liv and I). With many new adventures, blessings, partners and kids joining. It amazes me that life seems to become even sweeter and richer as it goes. I don’t think I’ve ever felt anything so profound as when I held my nephews or niece for the first time.

This summer however threw quite a few challenges our family’s way again. Troublesome news kept coming. My anxiety was high, my heart heavy and my mind completely preoccupied. You may have noticed stretches of my absence on social media or in the shop. One thing that filled summer was my journey on being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

It`s a very long story and symptoms go back further than even I knew, for now I am writing the cliff notes version. I was referred to Dr. O’Keefe for an eye appointment July 2nd after some extreme eye pain I’d been experiencing. He found my right optic nerve was swollen- optic neuritis. That along with some other symptoms I was looking into such as numbness were indicators of MS. He referred me for an urgent MRI. While I had known something felt wrong and I was no stranger to MS as my best friend had been diagnosed with it months before and my great aunt had suffered from it. It was really not what had crossed my mind as an explanation. It came as a bit of a shock but I was relieved to be getting some answers. My body had not felt like my own for months and this connected all the dots.

“Sometimes when you’re in a dark place you think you’ve been buried, but you’ve actually been planted. Bloom.”

Kristel Scheafer Photography

On July 9th I went for an MRI. It was my first one and I would say…I was not a huge fan. I did however have the nicest guy getting me ready and taking the MRI. Seems silly but I probably won’t ever forget him. In those scary and uncertain moments some people stand out for being so kind and making everything less scary and overwhelming. So, to whomever you are in the very slight chance you ever see this, thank you. I missed your name but your friendly conversation and tucking me in tight in for the MRI made the strange process easier. The MRI itself took an hour and a half. Which aside from sleeping is probably the longest I’ve ever gone without talking or moving in my life haha.

Since then my results were confirmed by Dr.O’keefe and then again at my first visit to the MS Clinic October 10th. I have relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. I will begin treatment October 29th. I will be going ahead with an aggressive treatment which will be an intervenes treatment once a month in Saskatoon. Which they have informed me also involves comfy chairs, Netflix, and free WiFi.

Here are some end things that I hope everyone can take away from this. For one, while this news is very disappointing, I am very optimistic and staying in extremely high spirits. This is my diagnosis; it has been confirmed by multiple doctors and I myself have seen the MRI photos. It is not wrong and that is okay. I will face this challenge, do what I can on my own, and trust in the extremely qualified professionals helping me. They have my best intention in mind and research/treatment have come extremely far as it is a common disease effecting many. Most days are still normal days for me and I eagerly embrace those days. Days at work, summer on the boat, time with my pups, laughs with family and friends, and of course snuggles with my nephews and niece. While certain challenges or feelings may arise each day, I look forward to the moments untouched by all this. This will not be what defines me and I am still me!

Secondly, this is one of the main explanation for the days the shop has been randomly closed. I have always aimed to interrupt work hours with this situation as little as possible. However, I know some days have and will be affected by treatment and other appointments. So please continue to bear with us as some days when we can’t get coverage the shop may be closed.

Kristel Scheafer Photography

Olivia, Preston, Teddy and I are taking a trip to Kelowna & Osoyoos. Hours will be a bit different this week, I will make sure to keep them posted. Kaibree is covering lots and can help you with anything you may need! Or, if needed she can leave a message for Liv or I. I will not be back till Wednesday next week. However, between Kaibree, Liv and I we are trying to cover the days as much as possible. I know these hours can sometimes be an inconvenience but Olivia and I run a small shop, aside from a little help from lovely girls, it is just the two of us. We are so grateful for your understanding and support!

Also, if you are sick please consider cancelling your appointment with me. MS weakens the immune system and treatment will even more. My doctors have stressed it is extremely important I avoid getting sick so if you are feeling under the weather, I am happy to reschedule you.

Next, to all my friends and clients I thank you a great deal for understanding and extremely appreciate all your thoughts, good vibes, prayers, etc. They always come as a great comfort! A big thank you to my bestie Mikaela who was diagnosed months before me and has been extremely helpful and as usual a great person to talk to.

I also want to thank all the healthcare providers who helped me in this process. I owe a ton to the Battlefords very own Dr. O’Keefe and his care. The MS Clinic and everyone else have been phenomenal, they are all extremely caring and helpful.

Lastly, to my family- thank you so much for everything. I have the most loving and supportive family. You all have made this so much easier on me. Your care and love are the greatest things I could ever ask for. Each of you have done something so special for me. Your roles in my life have helped formed me into the person I am today, a person who is prepared for this journey. Please never forget how eternally grateful I am for all of you. Love you all.

My personal community in all aspects of friends, clients, family, doctors, etc. have made this process so much easier. I am blessed for all that I have.

TOP 3 FALL PICKS

Fall always seems to be a fresh start. A fresh new season with a fresh new you. While we truly love summer, we do always enjoy the change. Leaves changing, cozy sweaters and lattes all seem to go so hand in hand. It’s also always exciting (maybe not for the budget) to see the new products hitting store shelves. We love to check out our fave places on Instagram and see what they’re bringing in… Which brings us to a few of our favourite things in the shop for fall. Just three to keep it simple. Yours and our fall must haves!

This awesome product is a tan in a can! Just because our suntan fades with the summer sun doesn’t mean we can’t keep a little glow! This product is a self tanner in a convenient spray. Perfect for doing your face, chest, and arms!

Keep a small part of summer with a beautiful glow that will show even with a fall sweater on! With clean ingredients, a buildable glow, and easy use it is the perfect product! Price: $35

Kevin Murphy Heated Defense

As we transition from cute summer messy buns to actually having to do our hair again it will take a hit. The blow drying, straightening, curling and dry dry winter air it’s time to protect your hair with Heated Defense- a weightless heat protectant foam.

This leave in foam easily distributes and disappears in hair to protect it up to 450F. Yep, that’s right, 450F which is hot! So hot you could most frozen food at a lower temp. Coal and Canary NEW 3 Wick Candles in Metallic Jar

Ahh candles! One of the best parts to fall. We always look forward to the release of Coal and Canary’s fall scents. 5 delicious smelling candles with scents like pumpkin, cake, brown sugar and honey. Oh, and don’t forget the classic smell of apples in the Cider Made Me Do It candle. Yep cute and cheeky names too.

The best part? They are now even more fall looking with the new metallic jar! Double the candle and burn time, plus the amazing scents of fall all contained in the cutest metallic jars. A 100 hour burn time, and don’t worry they have the same great crackling wick to remind you of a tiny campfire! Price: $45

SUMMER AT AURORA

Hello lovelies,

Just wanted to post a few snippets of information about what to expect over the summer here at Aurora Boutique!

As most know by now Olivia is expecting a baby in the next coming weeks and her last scheduled day of work is just two days away, May 31st.  While Olivia is away on maternity leave, the salon will carry on as usual, just without hair services! Olivia’s chair will not be filled while she is away. At this time, it is undecided when she will return to work, and when she does it will be part time. Keep an eye on our social media for the baby announcement and more updates as they come in the following months.

I will be here to offer all our other services- makeup, spray tanning, teeth whitening, facial waxing and brow tinting. As well as for any of your retail needs, we will have our same core brands as well as some new things. You can definitely expect some good sales, so make sure you still pop by to visit!

We have been looking to change our hours for sometime and with the break in Olivia’s schedule it gives us the opportunity. Our new hours will permanently go into effect starting July 1st 2019. Please be advised when I am in the back-room spray tanning, the front door will have to be locked during that time. I will have a sign up and be with you within a few minutes.

The new hours will be as follows:
Sunday/Monday: Closed
Tuesday: 10-5
Wednesday: 10-5
Thursday: 11-7
Friday: 10-5
Saturday: 10-3

We are a small team and aim to have the shop open as regularly as possible, however, there will be times that require us to close the shop to accommodate out of salon weddings and holidays.

We appreciate all of you that have been supportive of this new adventure for Olivia and Preston. She is looking forward to meeting her baby boy and having time off with him. When she is ready to return to work, she will be eager to see her clients and ease back into work.

I will be taking a few days off when baby arrives so that I can be the best possible auntie to him, and sister/sister in law to Olivia & Preston during this exciting change. And take a million pictures of him!

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it a million times- we truly are blessed and grateful to have opened up our shop in this incredible community. We hope to have your continued support and understanding as these change comes in the next few months!

WE’RE PROUD TO BE A GREEN CIRCLE SALON

If you’ve been in our salon you’ve probably noticed one of our many garbage bins or have even gotten confused as you tried to throw your candy wrapper in one of the four visible garbage’s and been told “not that one” till you finally hit the fifth bin. We promise we aren’t just trying to be difficult, each one of those garbage bins has an important purpose.

In 2018 we moved into our new space and the bigger space allowed us so many more opportunities to add to our business. Including partnering with a program called Green Circle Salons.

I’m going to drop some truth bombs for ya’ll right now. The beauty industry when it comes to environmental is kind of ugly. Salons produce so much waste, more than you probably would have ever guessed. Tin foil, cotton, rubber gloves, colour tubes, aerosol cans, paper, water bottles, disposable makeup applicators, paper towel…Not to mention the amount of packaging and cardboard boxes we see in a day… (Seriously, if any of you ever need to make a really large cardboard fort or move all your personal belongings, hit us up for boxes, we’ve always got!)

In fact, the North American salon industry produces 421,206 lbs of waste a day. That’s 877 lbs of waste every minute. Which is equivalent to 6.5 humpback whales a day. Green Circle works to partner up with salons and reduce 95% of their salon waste by recycling and repurposing. They even collect our left-over hair colour so it’s not washed down into our waterways. All our hair clippings are taken which are used to create “hair booms” for use in oil spills, and making pet beds for donation to disaster relief efforts. As well as researching into using it for storm water filtration and creating a bio composite plastic out of hair.

In our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle with Green Circle we are helping to make our salons footprint smaller. Now, we understand we are a small salon, but we are part of the 2,077 Green Circle salons across North America, who are also working to reduce their salon waste. Our salon may be small but we are part of something much bigger, and we know our efforts will make a difference.

“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” – Dalai Lama

Green Circles efforts have diverted 5,066,613 and counting pounds of waste from our landfills and waterways across Canada and the US since 2009.

We are also very excited to announce that Kevin Murphy has teamed up with a company called 4 Oceans. All bottles will be made from 100% ocean waste plastic.

As well we will be installing an ECOHEAD. The ECOHEADS showerhead is the first of its kind to deliver improved water pressure as well as reduced water usage. All while cleansing the water utilizing a two-step filtration process.

HOW TO KNOW IF A TEACH.ME MAKEUP CLASS IS RIGHT FOR YOU

Do you ever feel behind on current beauty trends, ready for a product change but too overwhelmed by the number of brands and products on the market, can’t quite master the smokey eye or those pesky false lashes? If you said yes to any of those questions or any other makeup related questions then a Teach.Me Makeup class might be perfect for you!
Makeup, can we just agree that we have a bit of a love hate relationship with it? It can make us feel so beautiful but even as a trained makeup artist some days I could just throw every eye shadow, lipstick, and highlighter right out the window. There is no reason to be ashamed that your kit may only include three essential products or that you have no clue what some products do. Or, even that you have locked yourself in your bathroom, spent a chunk of valuable time trying something new, ended up looking like a clown, and washed it all off in a fit of frustration. So, you (and by you I definitely mean me) just put on your sweatpants, poured a big glass of wine and stayed in for the night in defeat. Well that’s okay, but, there’s also no reason to settle with your everyday look when you are craving something new or working for your products instead of them working for you. You deserve better!

The world of makeup is ever changing and ever growing. And no one expects you to have time for a full glam face everyday or to fill your makeup bag with thirty different products. We took our first beauty lessons from moms, sisters, friends, or magazines when we were a teen and applying it for the first time and haven’t taken another class since. But, now I’m here to ask you, why not? Too busy? Too expensive? Too intimidating? It doesn’t have to be! I designed my class with all those factors in mind. I wanted to offer a class that is an hour, sixty dollars, and has no intimidating factors to it as well as you feel incredible leaving it.

There is nothing wrong with scheduling an hour to benefit ourselves. We all deserve some time to step away and feel pampered. The hour costs sixty dollars and you leave with a full face of makeup as well as a bunch of new tips and tricks. I ask you to bring your current makeup kit, and that’s not because I want to judge it. It’s because I don’t want you to feel the pressure that afterward you need to go out and buy all the products I used in order to achieve the same results. This way you can try some of my favourites and compare them to yours. This way you can achieve what you want to with what’s in your own kit. I will give you helpful recommendations and suggestions in case you decide a product in your kit just isn’t the right fit anymore or you feel like you’re missing something. People look at my kit and feel embarrassed of their own, don’t, before I started doing makeup professionally I had a very small and basic kit. The reason I have such a large kit is because it’s my job, I see lots of people with very different skin types and tones. I need to be prepared for lots of faces, you only need to be prepared for one. I would never expect your kit to look anything like mine. Also, I might have a mild beauty product shopping problem…

Something else we can all commonly struggle with is skincare. If that’s something you feel you are struggling with and are looking for help with then we can chat about that in a class too. There are just as many skin care products as there is makeup products so it’s another beauty category that is easy to get lost in. But, our skin is so important and I always say a great face of makeup starts with great skincare.

I also adapt every class to every person, based on your current routine, lifestyle, struggles and goals. If you have no problem with your foundation routine but are wanting to learn a couple new techniques for eye shadow applications, then that is what we’ll focus on. So, together let’s find you a routine and products that suit you.

I’m not saying everyday will be a perfect flawless makeup day (if anyone has figured that out though let me know) but let’s make it more of a love then a hate relationship. Let’s make it one of those easy relationships where you just get each other and can coexist in perfect harmony. Makeup can be an incredible tool in expressing our style and making us feel fabulous and I want to help you achieve your every makeup goal!

FALLING INTO FALL

It’s hard to think about fall because no one wants summer to end and we’ll definitely be soaking up every last bit of summer. But, fall is around the corner and does bring lots of new and exciting things- back to school, sweaters, turning of the leaves, Halloween, and of course new beauty trends!

With a second summer coming to an end we are feeling even more at home and continuously amazed by the support of you, our clients. We have come a long way since last June when we had one client a day, and we couldn’t have done it without each and everyone of you. We are excited to start looking to the fall and see what it will bring our way!

Fall- a time for a fresh new start and in a way, it’s like starting a new year. A time to stay cozy, start making new goals, and indulge in the coming beauty trends. We are believers in goal boards so we can’t wait to start creating new goals for Aurora Boutique. We want to fill it with things like both of us taking new education and product knowledge classes, bringing in a new retail line, keeping updated with our current retail lines, and some feng shui to the salon. One thing will always stay the same for us, we will continue to deliver high quality and unique services and products. The most important thing to us here at Aurora Boutique is to always give services and products that we stand one hundred percent by.

Ah fall trends, just scrolling Pinterest filled with pictures of sweaters, boots, deep colours, dark lips and lattes in hand brings excitement. Fall is a time for big changes and bold statements. And we LOVE it! Perusing Pinterest and articles to check out what’s coming our way this fall brings us inspiration and eagerness for the coming season.

We’re seeing fashion trends of fringe, faux fur, leather, glitter, metallics, denim, patchwork, sand and olive tones. Of course, we can’t forget about the plaid and flannel!

We can never wait to see what fall will bring to the hair world! We all love to go a little darker with our hair in the fall. But, going darker isn’t the only coming trend. Did you work really hard to lighten your hair this summer and aren’t ready to see it go? No worries, we’re seeing trends of adding face framing highlights to brunettes. Ashy, golden, caramel, and really multi tonal blondes have been seen on the runway. However, if you are feeling like making the fall leap, ash browns, deep mahoganies with golden brown touches, and of course ink black are all back. If you love the bold colours of reds and purples as well as don’t mind the upkeep, fire reds and rich burgundy/purples never go out of style in fall! Whatever the colour, we are seeing a lot of natural looking hair, low maintenance colours with tons of tones and natural looking highlights. As for styles- vintage buns (yes, I’m talking 90’s Spice Girl buns), sleek ponytails with textured ends, romantic stretched out waves, and pretty but easy updos such as the crown braid. With our newly offered Teach.Me Hair Class you can book an hour with Olivia to learn how to master these fall styles!

Makeup looks for fall always get the creativity and daringness flowing as we switch from our summer natural glow routine to more faired skinned and bolder colours. One big trend coming this fall is metallic. Metallic lip and eye colours graced the runways multiple times from multiple designers and makeup artists. Bold coppery, gold and purple metallic colours swept across the lid paired with a smoky black eyeliner are sure to make a statement this fall. You can pair a fierce and bold eye look with a more nude or muted lip to achieve that perfect ying and yang balance. Thick smudged eyeliner and deep berry coloured lipsticks both made a vampy statement on the runways. One term that keeps getting tossed around in the articles is punk. Bold colours such as teal and orange got paired with coal liner on top and bottom to give off that careless punk feeling. If this overall trend is a little too bold for you, try incorporating bits and pieces of it to a more laid-back look- add a touch of brightly coloured liner or try a blue mascara (I know the 80’s called and want their blue mascara back. But all good things come back around?..) Also, switch out those light pink blushes for deeper richer blushes to capture that fall look we all love!

Thanks for reading!

OUR YEAR IN REVIEW

1 year ago today the doors of Aurora Boutique officially opened. June 7th 2016, we welcomed our first client in the door and began one of the busiest and most rewarding year of our lives. Looking back on all that has happened it’s hard to believe we had time to experience all these wonderful things. Just a short year ago we left our jobs and homes in Saskatoon and headed to North Battleford. Opening Aurora Boutique was an opportunity for myself to be closer to Preston and to our home as well as venture out on my own business path. Emily was coming for a summer adventure at the lake and a break from her busy life in Saskatoon.

“Opening a new salon in a new town was terrifying. Only knowing a few people, it was certainly risky. Having people sit in my chair and trust me is humbling and watching my clientele grow to being booked solid is a dream come true. This year has given me so much growth in my professional and personal career. I knew owning your own business would be hard and I was definitely right about that, it’s a big learning curve. But, it definitely has its perks. – you are literally the only one to blame if you don’t enjoy your job!” -Olivia

“I wasn’t really nervous for Olivia to open her own business. She doesn’t have the personality to accept failure. Everything she does she does amazing at, she’s incredibly hard working and determined. She has undeniable natural talent and when you pair that with hard work it pays off. She also has the most caring and kind personality. She has always lit up every room she walked into so I knew she would be successful anywhere she went. And it didn’t take long for amazing people to find her.” -Emily

So, our year in review. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

365 Days ago, we opened the door for the very first time and let’s just say the 400sq/ft. room was pretty bare.

“I was relieved at the time however, as my styling chair had only arrived 3 days earlier. At the beginning, I had 1 client a day. That made me super happy as I had expected a lot of days with nothing. By the second week I had multiple clients a day. And, by the third week some days were even completely booked.” -Olivia

“It was a lot of anticipation to see how the first weeks would play out. And, I don’t think we ever expected them to be as busy as they were. That was cool to see! It’s hard to believe at that time I was suppose to be here just for the summer. Things have come a long way since those opening weeks!” -Emily

Over the year Aurora has gotten a little more crowded… a few more decorations, and A LOT more retail on the shelves. The space is certainly being used, and not only has our space developed but so has our client base. Our schedules are full every day and only seem to be growing.

Aside from the space its self we have done a lot of other fun things as well –

· Olivia working with Warne Photography and the Rock on the Rockettes calendar. Styling all the ladies hair for what turned out to be a kick ass calendar for an amazing cause.

· Taken Emily from a brunette to a blonde.

· Running our first fundraiser. Donating all the proceeds of men’s haircuts to the Movember Foundation. As well as donating baskets to so many amazing causes.

· Working with Blue Rentals (a business and women that have been so supportive of us) and sponsoring the bridal show. Doing some hair for the fashion show and having a vendor’s booth set up.

· Emily signing up for her makeup course through QC Academy and making a career out of a lifelong passion.

· Lending a hand with some hair and makeup for the Cochin Dinner theatre.

· Olivia taking numerous Kevin Murphy and La Biosthetique classes. Even venturing to Las Vegas for an incredible conference.

· Emily getting trained in OrganicTan.

· Working with amazing companies that keep Aurora true to our brand of being, clean, natural, and high quality.

· And of course, Olivia saying the big yes to Prestons’ proposal. Plus, taking the trip of a lifetime to Ireland together to celebrate!

We wanted to say thank you to our clients. Thank you for your support over this last year and thank you for having us be a part of your worlds. We have gotten to know a lot of you quite well. We have seen your families grow with your wedding and birth announcements. Sell, buy, and renovate your homes. Move on through hard times and laugh hard through good times. Thank you for choosing us so we can continue to do what we love here at the salon and to continue to grow personally and professionally.

A PEAK INTO MY SHOPPING CART

Hey everyone, Emily here!

As a makeup artist, I love to talk about products and answer all questions about makeup and products to the best I can! So, I thought today maybe I would hop on here and just give a small list of some of my favourite and must re-order products that can always be spotted in my shopping cart. It was hard to reign myself in because there were so many options, but I restrained myself and chose just five. I`ll tell you what they`re for, how to use them, what they cost, and where I find them!

1) Mac- Strobe Cream

UHHH how I love strobe cream! This product is the reason I put in Mac orders as often as I do. I have been hooked on this product for around 7 years, it`s a moisturizer with iridescent particles in it. Full of vitamins, green tea and with the iridescent particles it luminizes and boosts the look of dull skin. Mac has now upped the game and created them with a tint! Peach, red, pink (which was the original tint), silver, and my personal fave gold. The tint works great to neutralize our natural skin tone. This isn`t a moisturizer I would put on before bed because that`s a waste of good sparkle! This is the first step to my makeup routine every morning. I love the moisture and the shine it adds under my foundation. Or, in the summer if I`m feelin’ tan and fab and just wanna add a little glow, I`ll apply just strobe cream and mascara. It`s a higher price point but a little goes a long way and if you`re going to go with the original tint (pink) it`s a better bang for your buck to get two travel sized ones. This is my must try, always in my makeup bag, can`t skip product!

2) Bodyography- Cover and Correct Under Eye Concealer Duo

I am plagued with dark circles under my eyes, I think I could sleep for days and still have them. I`m just susceptible to darker colouring under my eyes now matter how rested I am. Therefore, I need a bulletproof concealer or I would purchase corrector sticks and

concealer to pair together to fight off the darkness. Then, I found this amazing two in one concealer from Bodyography, on the top it has a red correcting product and then on the bottom the actual skin coloured concealer. The reason for the red is because if we look to our colour wheel the opposite of blue (the colour of our dark circles) is red. Again, we are talking about using the colour wheel and opposite colours to neutralize and correct each other. Also, the red corrector has caffeine in it which actually helps to stimulate circulation under the eye diminishing dark circles. What doesn`t coffee improve seriously? First, I just use my finger to apply the red colour. Using your fingers is great because it warms the product up to body temperature making it easier to apply. I use my finger or beauty blender to apply the skin coloured concealer over top next. When picking a concealer, you always want to use a colour a little lighter then your foundation. This product comes in light, medium, and dark, I myself use light. I’ve had this product for a couple months and still have lots left. This is a great product for anyone and everyone!

3) Morphe- “Fall Into Frost” Eye Shadow Palette

This palette is so dreamy! My fave YouTube girl Jaclyn Hill uses Morphe products all the time so I thought I would check them out and wow, I was not disappointed! This gorgeous palette is full of beautiful metallic golds, browns, maroons and a row of neutral matte colours. The pigments in these shadows put all other eye shadows I’ve ever used straight to shame. They are so colourful yet to easy to blend! The price is reasonable, you order on the website in US dollars but even with the conversion the price is great. I’ve also heard you can pick up some of the products in the malls in Saskatoon at the As Seen on TV stores. Haven’t checked it out for myself yet, so not sure what they carry for palettes in them. With 30 different shadows in this palette and them being so pigmented you’ll get a good use out of this palette. I also love to use the first four colours for highlighting on my face, so glowy! Just from the one palette I’ve used from Morphe I would highly recommend their eye shadows in any palette.

4) Sara Happ- The Rose Gold Slip lip-gloss

Anyone else ever struggle when going out with the do I be practical and put on lip chap or do I put on a cute lip colour, well struggle no more ladies! Sara Happ has lipsticks that not only are adorable colours but also moisturizing. I fell madly deeply in love with the rose gold colour. I love rose gold so when I heard it I could get it in a lipstick I was so excited. It’s a golden nude blush colour with gorgeous shimmer. When I say it sparkles, I really mean it. It’s such a subtle soft colour but then the sparkles amp it up to create a perfect day or night look. It’s definitely a thicker consistency but it truly is moisturizing on the lips and a little is all you need. Bonus, you can get lip scrubs from Sara Happ as well if those lips need a good exfoliation before lip-gloss. Love the packaging on these lip glosses too, so pretty.

5) Lush- Cosmetic Lad

Alright, at the end of the day we have to wash all that makeup off and treat our face to some au naturel bareness and moisture. Even the best and most natural makeup products take a bit of a toll on our skin. Clogging pores, disrupting pH levels, and drying our skin. Which is why at the end of the day we have to make sure to wash and moisturize our face. I highly recommend the moisturizers from Lush. I use Cosmetic Lad but different skin types need different things from a moisturizer so make sure to check which one suits you best. If you go to lush.ca you can look through each moisturizer to see what they are good for. I love Cosmetic Lad because it has aloe vera, lavender honey water, and chamomile which are all soothing for irritation and redness. The almond oil and cocoa butter moisturize but also dry quickly. I put this on every night before bed and my skin still feels hydrated in the morning. However, it’s also a great choice pre-makeup routine. I like that it’s heavy enough to hydrate but light enough to let my skin breathe. It’s also a great option for men post shave (not that we want to share anything else with them). I use to work at Lush and I love all their products, it’s more then just strong smells and bath bombs. It’s hard to go wrong with any of their skin care products!

WHAT TO EXPECT AT AURORA BOUTIQUE

HELLO EVERYONE!

In case you haven’t had the chance to pop in and visit us at Aurora Boutique I would like to introduce myself and give you an idea of what my new business is all about. I am Olivia Staples, owner and stylist here at Aurora. You may have heard the name in passing and wondered what this Aurora Boutique is all about so I thought I would take an opportunity to give you an idea of what to expect when visiting us.

I refer to “us” a lot when describing the salon. Although I am the only stylist I don’t spend all my time alone. When you walk through our door you will most likely be greeted by Emily, my beautiful younger sister. She has moved here for the summer to help me out and my secret plan (that’s not so secret) is to convince her to stay for good. She mans the front desk helping all my wonderful clients book appointments, offers knowledge on our retail products, and rings you through after your appointment. She does so much more then I could ever mention and you will certainly see that at your visit.

So the name Aurora Boutique can be a touch confusing to some as you might expect to find clothing in a boutique. Boutique however can be defined as – a small company that offers highly specialized services or products. Which is something we most certainly have!

Small is a category we easily fall into. When you walk into Aurora you will find that my space is a whopping 400 square feet. Just enough (and sometimes not quite) room to house my most favorite things! I didn’t want to limit the opportunities for services and products that I carry so “Aurora Salon” just didn’t quite say the range of different things we do here.

For our selection of highly specialized services and products? Well…

Hair

If you are coming for a hair service, you will be dealing with yours truly. Although I can be a touch chatty, I am a great listener and we will spend the first portion of your appointment discussing your service. A thorough consultation is the only way to set us both up for success. This is the time for you to share with me your goals and concerns for the service you are about to receive. From there I take care of the rest and you can relax and take that time to get what you need. One big perk to a one chair hair salon is that we can chat without worrying whose listening, you can sit in silence without blow dryers in the back ground or if you want to take a snooze I’ll promise to lie to you if you have a drooling problem.

Organic Tan

Another service you might come in for would be an Organic Tan. What is this you may be wondering? Well an Organic Tan is a natural airbrush tan, AKA a spray tan!!! I know you might be thinking – “oh how fake!” “Or they make me nervous.” “I don’t want to look orange!” Well my friends I can assure you there is no tan like an Organic Tan. What makes us so different is that it is 100% customizable. Meaning we again have a discussion on what your goal for your tan is and together choose a shade that is perfect for your event and skin tone. Next the tan is applied with an airbrush gun (yes, you have to stand in your next to nothings in front of me) but no need to apologize for your stretch marks, cellulite or baby body! We all have insecurities and I can promise you that after your tan you will feel way better about those things. This tan, in my opinion, is literally like foundation for your body! Blending away all those unwanted inscriptions we have somehow “earned” in our lifetime.

With an Organic Tan we can ensure to get spots like, biceps, hips, inner legs and tops of shoulders things you might feel like get missed in a booth. With an Organic Tan you are responsible for nothing. I will make sure your tan is completely blended so no dark feet or hands, no blotching, and no build up of tan in creases such as elbows and knees. After a quick 20-minute total process you are on your way with a flawless tan (not orange in anyway) for up to 10 days.

Brow Care

The last service you can receive here is to take care of those eyebrows we all care so much about!!! Tinting and certainly waxing is something every eyebrow needs to experience. A pretty self-explanatory processes but also a very rewarding ones as well! Nothing better then making one eyebrow into two!

Retail

Kevin Murphy is the love of my life! A high quality line with beautiful packaging made from recycled materials, sulfate and paraben free formulas and every product does what is says its going to! Along with my hair product line we also have a variety of fun things to shop for.

Coal and Canary Candles – wood wick candles that sound like a mini campfire in your home, and smell of goodness!

– We are also stocked up with coffee mugs from MugShots, the cheekiest mugs you will ever have in your cupboard.

– Our newest line Erin Nicole Lash Haute Couture is a 100% mink strip lash line created right here in Saskatchewan! Lash Artist designed and hand crafted to give you the look of professional lash extensions without the commitment and the best part these babies can be worn up to 25X!

– Lastly Flora BodyCare – A natural, vegan, cruelty free line of scrubs and face masks to keep you loving your skin! Another Canadian made line that has been nothing but delightful!

There will forever be something new being carried here at Aurora and that is simply because I have a shopping problem! And because when I opened my doors I had a vision of carrying locally made, Canadian made and extremely unique items that you won’t find anywhere else in North Battleford. I have had a great time opening up Aurora Boutique here and have to say what an incredible community I have been welcomed into. There have been so many friendly faces I have had the privilege of meeting; everyone has been so kind and supportive, giving me many words of encouragement and kindness. So thank you to everyone who has stopped in to see me so far, you have given me an incredible first three months of business!

KEVIN MURPHY LOVE <3

What a crazy couple weeks it has been but I am thrilled to be in North Battleford and have the shop up and running! I feel right at home in my little space and have been so blessed with tons of support. There are multiple reasons I decided to open my own shop but the one I want to talk about today is the amazing product line I am carrying: Kevin Murphy.

Kevin Murphy is one of the worlds most respected and sought after session stylists! He has an iconic career working in fashion, runway, editorial, and film. Unsatisfied with the performance of the products he was using, Kevin recognized the need for weightless products that provide performance, strength, and longevity. Performance, strength, and longevity sound like the perfect products; and the perfect man too. The products are also highly concentrated so a little goes a long way, which saves you money, and we love that! I love that every product does exactly what it says and it takes one product to style and treat your hair. No need to clutter our already cluttered beauty closets with a million hair products when one or two Kevin Murphy products can do it all for your hair! And not only will your hair look fabulous, it will smell amazing too. I would wear the Repair Me line as perfume if I could! You’ll be turning heads with every toss of your hair!

His desire to make products that do not harm the environment or us is another reason why I wanted to carry his line. All Kevin Murphy products are sulphate, paraben, and cruelty free. To receive a cruelty free label means that not only does Kevin Murphy not test on animals but that every ingredient in every product of Kevin Murphy has not been tested on animals.

As every little bit counts I love that all of the packaging is recyclable or biodegradable. All ingredients are natural and come from a source that is sustainable and renewable and do not cause damage to the environment. Reuse, renew, recycle! The sleek square packaging holds more volume and uses 40% less plastic. We also love it for being so practical in our showers by taking up less space. With the cap at the bottom say goodbye to shaking the bottle up and down to get any product out too! The unique package designs and colours are soft, fun and true eye catchers up on the shelves. And speaking of shelves, you won’t find it on any drug store shelves. Kevin ensures no diversion so it’s a salon only product, which means no tampering or watering down the amazing formulas.

So there you have it everyone, why I am so passionate about carrying Kevin Murphy and why I am ecstatic for you to try it and fall in love with it the way I have!
