“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

To friends, clients, and anyone else reading this,

I have written and rewritten this post more times than I can count and debated not posting anything at all. However, I have always been an open person and find comfort in writing. I also believe we can find strength and support in sharing.

While our family are no strangers to hurdles, we seemed to have peace in a few years of “quiet” (not that our family is quiet, I mean you’ve met Liv and I). With many new adventures, blessings, partners and kids joining. It amazes me that life seems to become even sweeter and richer as it goes. I don’t think I’ve ever felt anything so profound as when I held my nephews or niece for the first time.

This summer however threw quite a few challenges our family’s way again. Troublesome news kept coming. My anxiety was high, my heart heavy and my mind completely preoccupied. You may have noticed stretches of my absence on social media or in the shop. One thing that filled summer was my journey on being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

It`s a very long story and symptoms go back further than even I knew, for now I am writing the cliff notes version. I was referred to Dr. O’Keefe for an eye appointment July 2nd after some extreme eye pain I’d been experiencing. He found my right optic nerve was swollen- optic neuritis. That along with some other symptoms I was looking into such as numbness were indicators of MS. He referred me for an urgent MRI. While I had known something felt wrong and I was no stranger to MS as my best friend had been diagnosed with it months before and my great aunt had suffered from it. It was really not what had crossed my mind as an explanation. It came as a bit of a shock but I was relieved to be getting some answers. My body had not felt like my own for months and this connected all the dots.

“Sometimes when you’re in a dark place you think you’ve been buried, but you’ve actually been planted. Bloom.”

Kristel Scheafer Photography

On July 9th I went for an MRI. It was my first one and I would say…I was not a huge fan. I did however have the nicest guy getting me ready and taking the MRI. Seems silly but I probably won’t ever forget him. In those scary and uncertain moments some people stand out for being so kind and making everything less scary and overwhelming. So, to whomever you are in the very slight chance you ever see this, thank you. I missed your name but your friendly conversation and tucking me in tight in for the MRI made the strange process easier. The MRI itself took an hour and a half. Which aside from sleeping is probably the longest I’ve ever gone without talking or moving in my life haha.

Since then my results were confirmed by Dr.O’keefe and then again at my first visit to the MS Clinic October 10th. I have relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. I will begin treatment October 29th. I will be going ahead with an aggressive treatment which will be an intervenes treatment once a month in Saskatoon. Which they have informed me also involves comfy chairs, Netflix, and free WiFi.

Here are some end things that I hope everyone can take away from this. For one, while this news is very disappointing, I am very optimistic and staying in extremely high spirits. This is my diagnosis; it has been confirmed by multiple doctors and I myself have seen the MRI photos. It is not wrong and that is okay. I will face this challenge, do what I can on my own, and trust in the extremely qualified professionals helping me. They have my best intention in mind and research/treatment have come extremely far as it is a common disease effecting many. Most days are still normal days for me and I eagerly embrace those days. Days at work, summer on the boat, time with my pups, laughs with family and friends, and of course snuggles with my nephews and niece. While certain challenges or feelings may arise each day, I look forward to the moments untouched by all this. This will not be what defines me and I am still me!

Secondly, this is one of the main explanation for the days the shop has been randomly closed. I have always aimed to interrupt work hours with this situation as little as possible. However, I know some days have and will be affected by treatment and other appointments. So please continue to bear with us as some days when we can’t get coverage the shop may be closed.

Kristel Scheafer Photography

Olivia, Preston, Teddy and I are taking a trip to Kelowna & Osoyoos. Hours will be a bit different this week, I will make sure to keep them posted. Kaibree is covering lots and can help you with anything you may need! Or, if needed she can leave a message for Liv or I. I will not be back till Wednesday next week. However, between Kaibree, Liv and I we are trying to cover the days as much as possible. I know these hours can sometimes be an inconvenience but Olivia and I run a small shop, aside from a little help from lovely girls, it is just the two of us. We are so grateful for your understanding and support!

Also, if you are sick please consider cancelling your appointment with me. MS weakens the immune system and treatment will even more. My doctors have stressed it is extremely important I avoid getting sick so if you are feeling under the weather, I am happy to reschedule you.

Next, to all my friends and clients I thank you a great deal for understanding and extremely appreciate all your thoughts, good vibes, prayers, etc. They always come as a great comfort! A big thank you to my bestie Mikaela who was diagnosed months before me and has been extremely helpful and as usual a great person to talk to.

I also want to thank all the healthcare providers who helped me in this process. I owe a ton to the Battlefords very own Dr. O’Keefe and his care. The MS Clinic and everyone else have been phenomenal, they are all extremely caring and helpful.

Lastly, to my family- thank you so much for everything. I have the most loving and supportive family. You all have made this so much easier on me. Your care and love are the greatest things I could ever ask for. Each of you have done something so special for me. Your roles in my life have helped formed me into the person I am today, a person who is prepared for this journey. Please never forget how eternally grateful I am for all of you. Love you all.

My personal community in all aspects of friends, clients, family, doctors, etc. have made this process so much easier. I am blessed for all that I have.

Hello lovelies,

Just wanted to post a few snippets of information about what to expect over the summer here at Aurora Boutique!

As most know by now Olivia is expecting a baby in the next coming weeks and her last scheduled day of work is just two days away, May 31st.  While Olivia is away on maternity leave, the salon will carry on as usual, just without hair services! Olivia’s chair will not be filled while she is away. At this time, it is undecided when she will return to work, and when she does it will be part time. Keep an eye on our social media for the baby announcement and more updates as they come in the following months.

I will be here to offer all our other services- makeup, spray tanning, teeth whitening, facial waxing and brow tinting. As well as for any of your retail needs, we will have our same core brands as well as some new things. You can definitely expect some good sales, so make sure you still pop by to visit!

We have been looking to change our hours for sometime and with the break in Olivia’s schedule it gives us the opportunity. Our new hours will permanently go into effect starting July 1st 2019. Please be advised when I am in the back-room spray tanning, the front door will have to be locked during that time. I will have a sign up and be with you within a few minutes.

The new hours will be as follows:
Sunday/Monday: Closed
Tuesday: 10-5
Wednesday: 10-5
Thursday: 11-7
Friday: 10-5
Saturday: 10-3

We are a small team and aim to have the shop open as regularly as possible, however, there will be times that require us to close the shop to accommodate out of salon weddings and holidays.

We appreciate all of you that have been supportive of this new adventure for Olivia and Preston. She is looking forward to meeting her baby boy and having time off with him. When she is ready to return to work, she will be eager to see her clients and ease back into work.

I will be taking a few days off when baby arrives so that I can be the best possible auntie to him, and sister/sister in law to Olivia & Preston during this exciting change. And take a million pictures of him!

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it a million times- we truly are blessed and grateful to have opened up our shop in this incredible community. We hope to have your continued support and understanding as these change comes in the next few months!

If you’ve been in our salon you’ve probably noticed one of our many garbage bins or have even gotten confused as you tried to throw your candy wrapper in one of the four visible garbage’s and been told “not that one” till you finally hit the fifth bin. We promise we aren’t just trying to be difficult, each one of those garbage bins has an important purpose.

In 2018 we moved into our new space and the bigger space allowed us so many more opportunities to add to our business. Including partnering with a program called Green Circle Salons.

I’m going to drop some truth bombs for ya’ll right now. The beauty industry when it comes to environmental is kind of ugly. Salons produce so much waste, more than you probably would have ever guessed. Tin foil, cotton, rubber gloves, colour tubes, aerosol cans, paper, water bottles, disposable makeup applicators, paper towel…Not to mention the amount of packaging and cardboard boxes we see in a day… (Seriously, if any of you ever need to make a really large cardboard fort or move all your personal belongings, hit us up for boxes, we’ve always got!)

In fact, the North American salon industry produces 421,206 lbs of waste a day. That’s 877 lbs of waste every minute. Which is equivalent to 6.5 humpback whales a day. Green Circle works to partner up with salons and reduce 95% of their salon waste by recycling and repurposing. They even collect our left-over hair colour so it’s not washed down into our waterways. All our hair clippings are taken which are used to create “hair booms” for use in oil spills, and making pet beds for donation to disaster relief efforts. As well as researching into using it for storm water filtration and creating a bio composite plastic out of hair.

In our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle with Green Circle we are helping to make our salons footprint smaller. Now, we understand we are a small salon, but we are part of the 2,077 Green Circle salons across North America, who are also working to reduce their salon waste. Our salon may be small but we are part of something much bigger, and we know our efforts will make a difference.

“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” – Dalai Lama

Green Circles efforts have diverted 5,066,613 and counting pounds of waste from our landfills and waterways across Canada and the US since 2009.

We are also very excited to announce that Kevin Murphy has teamed up with a company called 4 Oceans. All bottles will be made from 100% ocean waste plastic.

As well we will be installing an ECOHEAD. The ECOHEADS showerhead is the first of its kind to deliver improved water pressure as well as reduced water usage. All while cleansing the water utilizing a two-step filtration process.

1 year ago today the doors of Aurora Boutique officially opened. June 7th 2016, we welcomed our first client in the door and began one of the busiest and most rewarding year of our lives. Looking back on all that has happened it’s hard to believe we had time to experience all these wonderful things. Just a short year ago we left our jobs and homes in Saskatoon and headed to North Battleford. Opening Aurora Boutique was an opportunity for myself to be closer to Preston and to our home as well as venture out on my own business path. Emily was coming for a summer adventure at the lake and a break from her busy life in Saskatoon.

“Opening a new salon in a new town was terrifying. Only knowing a few people, it was certainly risky. Having people sit in my chair and trust me is humbling and watching my clientele grow to being booked solid is a dream come true. This year has given me so much growth in my professional and personal career. I knew owning your own business would be hard and I was definitely right about that, it’s a big learning curve. But, it definitely has its perks. – you are literally the only one to blame if you don’t enjoy your job!” -Olivia

“I wasn’t really nervous for Olivia to open her own business. She doesn’t have the personality to accept failure. Everything she does she does amazing at, she’s incredibly hard working and determined. She has undeniable natural talent and when you pair that with hard work it pays off. She also has the most caring and kind personality. She has always lit up every room she walked into so I knew she would be successful anywhere she went. And it didn’t take long for amazing people to find her.” -Emily

So, our year in review. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

365 Days ago, we opened the door for the very first time and let’s just say the 400sq/ft. room was pretty bare.

“I was relieved at the time however, as my styling chair had only arrived 3 days earlier. At the beginning, I had 1 client a day. That made me super happy as I had expected a lot of days with nothing. By the second week I had multiple clients a day. And, by the third week some days were even completely booked.” -Olivia

“It was a lot of anticipation to see how the first weeks would play out. And, I don’t think we ever expected them to be as busy as they were. That was cool to see! It’s hard to believe at that time I was suppose to be here just for the summer. Things have come a long way since those opening weeks!” -Emily

Over the year Aurora has gotten a little more crowded… a few more decorations, and A LOT more retail on the shelves. The space is certainly being used, and not only has our space developed but so has our client base. Our schedules are full every day and only seem to be growing.

Aside from the space its self we have done a lot of other fun things as well –

· Olivia working with Warne Photography and the Rock on the Rockettes calendar. Styling all the ladies hair for what turned out to be a kick ass calendar for an amazing cause.

· Taken Emily from a brunette to a blonde.

· Running our first fundraiser. Donating all the proceeds of men’s haircuts to the Movember Foundation. As well as donating baskets to so many amazing causes.

· Working with Blue Rentals (a business and women that have been so supportive of us) and sponsoring the bridal show. Doing some hair for the fashion show and having a vendor’s booth set up.

· Emily signing up for her makeup course through QC Academy and making a career out of a lifelong passion.

· Lending a hand with some hair and makeup for the Cochin Dinner theatre.

· Olivia taking numerous Kevin Murphy and La Biosthetique classes. Even venturing to Las Vegas for an incredible conference.

· Emily getting trained in OrganicTan.

· Working with amazing companies that keep Aurora true to our brand of being, clean, natural, and high quality.

· And of course, Olivia saying the big yes to Prestons’ proposal. Plus, taking the trip of a lifetime to Ireland together to celebrate!

We wanted to say thank you to our clients. Thank you for your support over this last year and thank you for having us be a part of your worlds. We have gotten to know a lot of you quite well. We have seen your families grow with your wedding and birth announcements. Sell, buy, and renovate your homes. Move on through hard times and laugh hard through good times. Thank you for choosing us so we can continue to do what we love here at the salon and to continue to grow personally and professionally.

In case you haven’t had the chance to pop in and visit us at Aurora Boutique I would like to introduce myself and give you an idea of what my new business is all about. I am Olivia Staples, owner and stylist here at Aurora. You may have heard the name in passing and wondered what this Aurora Boutique is all about so I thought I would take an opportunity to give you an idea of what to expect when visiting us.

I refer to “us” a lot when describing the salon. Although I am the only stylist I don’t spend all my time alone. When you walk through our door you will most likely be greeted by Emily, my beautiful younger sister. She has moved here for the summer to help me out and my secret plan (that’s not so secret) is to convince her to stay for good. She mans the front desk helping all my wonderful clients book appointments, offers knowledge on our retail products, and rings you through after your appointment. She does so much more then I could ever mention and you will certainly see that at your visit.

So the name Aurora Boutique can be a touch confusing to some as you might expect to find clothing in a boutique. Boutique however can be defined as – a small company that offers highly specialized services or products. Which is something we most certainly have!

Small is a category we easily fall into. When you walk into Aurora you will find that my space is a whopping 400 square feet. Just enough (and sometimes not quite) room to house my most favorite things! I didn’t want to limit the opportunities for services and products that I carry so “Aurora Salon” just didn’t quite say the range of different things we do here.

For our selection of highly specialized services and products? Well…

If you are coming for a hair service, you will be dealing with yours truly. Although I can be a touch chatty, I am a great listener and we will spend the first portion of your appointment discussing your service. A thorough consultation is the only way to set us both up for success. This is the time for you to share with me your goals and concerns for the service you are about to receive. From there I take care of the rest and you can relax and take that time to get what you need. One big perk to a one chair hair salon is that we can chat without worrying whose listening, you can sit in silence without blow dryers in the back ground or if you want to take a snooze I’ll promise to lie to you if you have a drooling problem.

Organic Tan

Another service you might come in for would be an Organic Tan. What is this you may be wondering? Well an Organic Tan is a natural airbrush tan, AKA a spray tan!!! I know you might be thinking – “oh how fake!” “Or they make me nervous.” “I don’t want to look orange!” Well my friends I can assure you there is no tan like an Organic Tan. What makes us so different is that it is 100% customizable. Meaning we again have a discussion on what your goal for your tan is and together choose a shade that is perfect for your event and skin tone. Next the tan is applied with an airbrush gun (yes, you have to stand in your next to nothings in front of me) but no need to apologize for your stretch marks, cellulite or baby body! We all have insecurities and I can promise you that after your tan you will feel way better about those things. This tan, in my opinion, is literally like foundation for your body! Blending away all those unwanted inscriptions we have somehow “earned” in our lifetime.

With an Organic Tan we can ensure to get spots like, biceps, hips, inner legs and tops of shoulders things you might feel like get missed in a booth. With an Organic Tan you are responsible for nothing. I will make sure your tan is completely blended so no dark feet or hands, no blotching, and no build up of tan in creases such as elbows and knees. After a quick 20-minute total process you are on your way with a flawless tan (not orange in anyway) for up to 10 days.

Brow Care

The last service you can receive here is to take care of those eyebrows we all care so much about!!! Tinting and certainly waxing is something every eyebrow needs to experience. A pretty self-explanatory processes but also a very rewarding ones as well! Nothing better then making one eyebrow into two!

Kevin Murphy is the love of my life! A high quality line with beautiful packaging made from recycled materials, sulfate and paraben free formulas and every product does what is says its going to! Along with my hair product line we also have a variety of fun things to shop for.

Coal and Canary Candles – wood wick candles that sound like a mini campfire in your home, and smell of goodness!

B-Sparkled – A gorgeous earring collection from a company based out of Regina. These girls are beyond talented and keep our shelves stocked with the latest, creative studs from their line.

– We are also stocked up with coffee mugs from MugShots, the cheekiest mugs you will ever have in your cupboard.

– Our newest line Erin Nicole Lash Haute Couture is a 100% mink strip lash line created right here in Saskatchewan! Lash Artist designed and hand crafted to give you the look of professional lash extensions without the commitment and the best part these babies can be worn up to 25X!

– Lastly Flora BodyCare – A natural, vegan, cruelty free line of scrubs and face masks to keep you loving your skin! Another Canadian made line that has been nothing but delightful!

There will forever be something new being carried here at Aurora and that is simply because I have a shopping problem! And because when I opened my doors I had a vision of carrying locally made, Canadian made and extremely unique items that you won’t find anywhere else in North Battleford. I have had a great time opening up Aurora Boutique here and have to say what an incredible community I have been welcomed into. There have been so many friendly faces I have had the privilege of meeting; everyone has been so kind and supportive, giving me many words of encouragement and kindness. So thank you to everyone who has stopped in to see me so far, you have given me an incredible first three months of business!
