WE’RE PROUD TO BE A GREEN CIRCLE SALON

If you’ve been in our salon you’ve probably noticed one of our many garbage bins or have even gotten confused as you tried to throw your candy wrapper in one of the four visible garbage’s and been told “not that one” till you finally hit the fifth bin. We promise we aren’t just trying to be difficult, each one of those garbage bins has an important purpose.

In 2018 we moved into our new space and the bigger space allowed us so many more opportunities to add to our business. Including partnering with a program called Green Circle Salons.

I’m going to drop some truth bombs for ya’ll right now. The beauty industry when it comes to environmental is kind of ugly. Salons produce so much waste, more than you probably would have ever guessed. Tin foil, cotton, rubber gloves, colour tubes, aerosol cans, paper, water bottles, disposable makeup applicators, paper towel…Not to mention the amount of packaging and cardboard boxes we see in a day… (Seriously, if any of you ever need to make a really large cardboard fort or move all your personal belongings, hit us up for boxes, we’ve always got!)

In fact, the North American salon industry produces 421,206 lbs of waste a day. That’s 877 lbs of waste every minute. Which is equivalent to 6.5 humpback whales a day. Green Circle works to partner up with salons and reduce 95% of their salon waste by recycling and repurposing. They even collect our left-over hair colour so it’s not washed down into our waterways. All our hair clippings are taken which are used to create “hair booms” for use in oil spills, and making pet beds for donation to disaster relief efforts. As well as researching into using it for storm water filtration and creating a bio composite plastic out of hair.

In our efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle with Green Circle we are helping to make our salons footprint smaller. Now, we understand we are a small salon, but we are part of the 2,077 Green Circle salons across North America, who are also working to reduce their salon waste. Our salon may be small but we are part of something much bigger, and we know our efforts will make a difference.

“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” – Dalai Lama

Green Circles efforts have diverted 5,066,613 and counting pounds of waste from our landfills and waterways across Canada and the US since 2009.

We are also very excited to announce that Kevin Murphy has teamed up with a company called 4 Oceans. All bottles will be made from 100% ocean waste plastic.

As well we will be installing an ECOHEAD. The ECOHEADS showerhead is the first of its kind to deliver improved water pressure as well as reduced water usage. All while cleansing the water utilizing a two-step filtration process.
